  1. INTRODUACTION

Eritrean and Ethiopian volunteer sponsor from Canada established Nehemiah project on May 25 2015. The project was started in Shemalba Eritrean refugee camp with 65 beneficiaries. Shire Kalehiwot church was the owner of the project and entered in to agreement with relevant government bodies.

Currently the project is in Addis Ababa; Due to the project area is war zone. The main objectives of the project are to help the needy family and children with funding from our donor partners. To address the problem, we collaborated with united refugee church in Addis Ababa to provide us information on the most vulnerable beneficiaries. Based on house hold base with different ranges family.

1.1 Targeted Beneficiaries Registration

1.1.3 Partnership

United refugee church in Addis Ababa and vision for Ethiopia Association work together with Covalent in a holistic approach. Their main aim is to give basic needs for the benefiters.

  1. PROJECT IMPLEMENTING DESCRIPTION

      2.1 Purchasing Process

Even though the availability of the items needs for our beneficiaries is not an        issue, due to price, availability of invoice and stock demand are not achievable easily. To solve this issue, we proceed to collect the items from main manufactures. However, collecting these from different locations was very tiresome and time consuming as it requires crossing the congested city many times.

To minimize this problem, all the necessary items for three times distribution 6 months were collected at one time from each available store and put in stock for distribution as per schedule.

2.2. Distribution Process

After the distribution day we collected the items and take to the distribution place. Schedule was arranged a day ahead and all the stuffs necessary for each beneficiaries was arranged in one package. Finally the distribution was efficient and it reduces their waiting time to collect the items.

2.3. Beneficiaries Feedback

After the distribution is completed we have communicated with the beneficiaries’ bout their feedback on our donations. All were happy and thanked every partner in these holy activities and urged us to continue and expanded such kind of support to address more vulnerable

2.4 Distributed items

The distributed items were as follows

  • Marconi
  • Pasta
  • Edible oil
  • Non edible hair oil
  • Sanitary life boy soap
  1. CHALLENGES/ LIMITATION

Collecting the items was very challenging starting from tracing the previous available products which are good items and finding the possible potential sources in this broad city (Addis Ababa}. Travelling was not easy as the traffic jam was intense. Getting an item in one location was not possible, so difficulty of collecting from different places was beyond our expression in this city.

School Award of 2021

In Ethiopia, at the end of academic year there is closing ceremony at each school that includes parents, students, government officials, representatives of leaders, and school communities as well. Concerning to the school result, it is the day that students show different character or behavior. All students are longing to know or hear his/her annual result of the school. It has three categories like the students who worked well competing for the first to third rank, those who worked medium work do not worry about the result but simply go to the ceremony and those who did not work well and spent their time with useless things and lack of attention go to the ceremony with frustration and lack of confidence.

This day was conducted as follows:

  1. School regular activities
    1. General speeches delivered by government officials and school directors that is focused on the whole year activities and accomplishments as a report.
    2. Different dramas and literatures preformed by students

  2. The teachers are ready to perform in best way than this school year
  3. The government officials praised and acknowledged the work of VEA for this motivational award.
  4. Finally as Vision for Ethiopia Association workers, when we saw the motivation of the students and teachers, it gives us an assignment to work better in “School Award” program for the future.

Emergency Program Report

Emergency Support for Tigeray and Metekel IDP

The security situation in Northern Ethiopia Tigeray and North West Ethiopia Besnahangul is highly volatile, with the recent escalation of heavy clashes between Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF) and Tigeray Forces and their respective allied forces in the Amhara and Afar regions. Since then, Ethiopia’s Minister of Justice has declared a nationwide state of emergency.

Over 840,000 have been displaced due to conflict in the two regions, according to estimates by the Government of Ethiopia. Because of these lots of humanitarian organizations involved supporting those peoples in the regions. But the situation is very difficult to work and support the peoples in the area.

Since 18 October, WFP has not managed to deliver humanitarian cargo to the Tigeray Region. Only 1,114 truckloads have entered since 12 July, which is not nearly enough to meet the needs of 5.2 million people in the region. Compounding the situation, fuel stocks inside the region have all but run out for humanitarian operations. This has caused WFP and its partners significantly reduce, and in some cases halt, their lifesaving activities in the Tigeray Region.

Due to insecurity, all United Nations Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS) flights into Mekelle have been suspended until further notice. WFP and UN partners continue to advocate with the Federal Government for safe and secure clearance of UNHAS flights and also with the Tigrayan authorities for security checks at the airport in Kombolcha for UNHAS flights to operate into the Amhara Region.

Program Implementation

Due to the political situation and conflict in the tow regions, Vision for Ethiopia Association has got a fund from Ethiopian Evangelicals Churches Fellowship in Canada to implement it to meet an intended goal to address and support the community affected by the political situation in the region.

The goal of the fund is to motivate Christian community in the regions and support financially the victim and displaced people in the areas.

As per of a discussion with the donor (Ethiopian Evangelical Churches Fellowship in Canada) and Vision for Ethiopia Association, the project started to be implemented on April 2021 but duo to the political condition and the war in the areas very difficult to implementing the program at the given time. The amount of the project cost is 50,000 Canadian Dollar.

The fund support for the peoples in the area is through Ethiopian Evangelical Churches Fellowship regional offices in the two regions and the donor instruct to deliver the fund accordingly for three specific ways. The firs amount 25,000.00 Canadian Dollar distribute for Tigrayan displaced people through North region Ethiopian Evangelical Church Fellowship office and the second amount 20,000.00 Canadian Dollar distributed for Metekel area Besnahangul Gumz region politically displaced people through North West region Ethiopian Evangelical Churches Fellowship office and the third 5,000.00 Canadian Dollar for Eritreans people displaced from their refugees in Tigray region.

Vision for Ethiopia Association has taken immediate action to implement according to the agreement with Ethiopian Evangelical Churches Fellowship in Canada and has worked in team with other responsible bodies like Ethiopian Evangelical Churches Fellowship Coordinators in the two regions.

When the program started Vision for Ethiopia management discussed about on how to implement the support with the responsible persons from the two offices and both suggested delivering the support by distributing the money to the beneficiaries in cash. Both the two offices take the responsibility to select the most needy Christian peoples in their area and send the full information to Vision for Ethiopia office in Addis Abeba. Then the Vision for Ethiopia office sends the money with both the fellowship account and receives required legal documents. Additionally the Vision for Ethiopia management delivers the gift by traveling at their area with all the challenges and the political instability in the regions. The support delivered with a sample cheek between the two-fellowship management and Vision for Ethiopia management in different time at the regions. The Tigrayan support given at mid of May 2021 and The Metekel support given at the mid of June at the Bahirdar city at the North West Evangelical Churches fellowship office with a public event.

With the above two activity we can distribute only the 90% of the fund support which is the 45,000 Canadian dollar. But the other support the 10% which is 5,000.00 Canadian dollar still not deliver the money because of the plan was to distribute for Eritrean refugees in Tigeray people and because of the war this refugees displaced to different regions. But now we are in discussion between those Eritrean refugee Church leaders and the Nehemiah Ministry leaders in Canada.

The support is done accordingly;

Lists of Regions

Achieved Goal

The overall goal of this project is to support the Church and the believers in the two regions in distribution of cash for 1,500.00 birr for each household.

  • Addressing the periodic need of the 900 household and 4,500 peoples in the two regions.
  • Can win the Tigrayan Church leaders by showing love for them and giving practical support for those in need people in the area.
  • Encouraging the believers in the area and motivating to follow Christ by understand there is a Christian community shows the love behind us.

Outcome of the project

After the project implemented:

  • Over 900 households get a financial support to address their current need and cover their expanse.
  • Over 4,500 people in the family can address some items from the financial support.
  • The Church can support the community by distributing these materials for the vulnerable community.
  • Create opportunity for the Ethiopian community and the believers in the Church to participate in their country issues and help the community with different ways especially for the Tigrian people.

Inputs (Material, Finance and manpower)

At the time of implementation the following inputs have consumed accordingly;

  • Material: – Vision for Ethiopia Association, Evangelical Churches Fellowship of Ethiopia regional offices and Churches use their own materials to succeed the project.
  • Financial: – an allocated budget has covered all cost of the project implementing process. Vision for Ethiopia Association use few amount of money for the distribution of the program in the two regions.
  • Manpower: – the staffs of Vision for Ethiopia Association and other Church leaders, representatives, volunteers, and stakeholders have committed highly and participated well for the project success.

Risk & Its Management

Risks:

  • The political situation of the Country and the war in the project implementation areas.
  • The Ethiopian Church specially the Tigrian Church elders expectation and fear and trauma. Not wiling to received the support and work with other Ethiopian community specially Churches.
  • The problem of finding possible ways to implement the project effectively in line with the Church elders need and demand.

Risk management:

  • For the encountered risk which unstable peace and security in the country and specifically in the project implementation areas, Vision for Ethiopia and the other volunteer members have shown much effort especially the Church elders helped us with great efforts of communication.
  • For the trust issue the Vision for Ethiopia management and the donor take much discussion on trusting the elders and the team. Again the person from USA named Engineer Teame helped us as a mediator to create understanding and trust each other.

Monitoring & Evaluation

As an implementer, Vision for Ethiopia Association Executive Director has visited on the day of distribution. Also there was a Church representative who observed the process and has provided their feedback as well. Also an executive director of VEA has taken a vital role with management team to monitor overall project implementation.

Challenges

In the project implementations process the following challenges was happened:

  • Political conditions of the country specifically the instability of peace in the project implementation area especially in Tigray area. The political situation of Metekel area also very difficult in the area lots of rebellions in the area makes the process slower and unpredictable.
  • Immediately after the implementation, war started in the area all the Tigray and Amhara regions so it was very difficult to collect report from the area. N o phone call and Internet connection disabled in the area so things may difficult.
  • Because of the war in the area Eritrean refugees displaced from their existing area so implementing the third support, which is supporting 5,000.00 Canadian supports, can’t implement.

Eritrean Immigrants Internally Displaced People

 Emergency Support

VEA has been responding for an emergency that has been rising due to different reasons, and different place in Ethiopia. Currently the emergency response need was happen on Eritrean Migrants who are living in Addis Ababa and the donor prefer to support them.

Its implementation has discussed with the Immigrants’ representatives how to select and when and where to implement. Then the center was at Lunch church where Eritreans get together.

The steps are:

  • Discussion with representatives
  • Beneficiaries selecting from different Eritrean churches located in Addis
  • Registration and bank account collecting has done including signature. Because due the government regulations, it was not allowed to pull out the money more than 75,000 in organizational level.
